Top honour for contributions to rural mental health

Dr Ken Fielke

Dr Ken Fielke received an Order of Australia Medal in the South Australian General Division in this years Queen's Birthday Honours announced on 9 June 2008.

Dr Fielke is a psychiatrist and received his medal for services to rural and remote communities through the delivery of mental health services and programs. He has recently been appointed as Clinical Director for Country Mental Health in South Australia, and is passionate about equitable, safe and sustainable mental health services to regional and remote South Australia.

Dr Fielke has been Academic Coordinator of the Rural Undergraduate Support and Coordination (RUSC) program in Flinders University’s Rural Clinical School. He has recently taken on a new role as Clinical Educator in Mental Health in the Rural Clinical School.

Dr Fielke grew up and was educated in country South Australia. He has worked in rural and remote communities as a General Practitioner and more recently as a Consultant Psychiatrist using a consultation - liaison approach in primary care. He is committed to increasing local capacity and the provision of care to under-serviced and under-resourced rural communities.
