Combined BMBS/PhD degree

A variety of options may be available for suitably qualified students who wish to pursue a combination of the Medicine program (BMBS) with a further higher degree. The high level of research activity at the Flinders Medical School provides plenty of scope for students to participate in research as part of the elective program and includes opportunities to enrol in a combined BMBS/Ph.D. program. This option requires the applicant to have already gained an Honours degree or equivalent, and is normally completed within 6 years.

Students enrolling in the combined degree devote the 12.5% of the medical course allocated to elective study to the pursuit of their additional studies. The additional periods of fulltime research required for the BMBS/PhD degree will be programmed around the medical course on an individual student basis. If you wish to be considered for a combined BMBS/PhD, you should mark the appropriate box on the application form. Submit the following information with the application you post to the Graduate Medical Admissions Centre at ACER

  • a one-page document describing your research experience, reasons for wishing to undertake the combined degree program and a brief outline of the area of research you would like to pursue.
  • a list of publications and/or conference presentations; and
  • names and addresses of two people who can comment on your aptitude for research (one of these should be your Honours supervisor, where relevant).

It is recognised that students in their Honours year may not yet have publications and may have only a general idea of areas of research they wish to pursue.

Specialist training for local or overseas-trained doctors

Some information about career paths immediately after graduation from the Flinders medical program is provided under "Course Outline > Internships". Specialist training for medical practitioners in Australia is not conducted directly by Universities or Medical Schools but is controlled by Professional Colleges.

Police Checks

All students at Flinders who are enrolling in courses which have a clinical or placement component which may involve their contact with children, young people and vulnerable adults will be required to undergo an Offender History Record Check (Police Check) prior to undertaking any placement.  This requirement is being introduced by most placement agencies in order to meet their 'duty of care' to clients.  Students with 'relevant' criminal records may not be permitted to undertake their placements and may therefore not be able to complete their course requirements.   Commencing BMBS students will be provided with further information about this requirement with their offer letters.

Registration with the Medical Board of South Australia

Under the terms of the Medical Practice Act 2004, medical students are required (as a condition of their enrolment at the University) to register each year with the Medical Board of SA for the duration of their medical studies.  Commencing students will be provided with information about the registration process with their offer letters. The registration form requires students to make declarations to the Medical Board about their previous registrations, their health and any criminal convictions.

The Medical Practice Act 2004 also places obligations on

a) medical practitioners/health professionals/the University to inform the Board of a student's medical unfitness or unprofessional conduct;
b) students to report their medical unfitness to the Board; and
c) the University and the student  to report to the Board if a student ceases to be enrolled in the medical course.

Health Advisory Information

Medical students have an important responsibility to protect their own health and the health of patients by observing the requirements described in the ‘Health Advisory Booklet for Medical Students’.

Please note, in particular, the Students’ Action List. After enrolment, all commencing first year medical students are required to sign a Statement of Compliance with the policy set out in the Health Advisory Booklet, and to document their immunisation status. You may therefore wish to secure an immunisation record from your family doctor before coming to Flinders.

Who to contact

A contact list is provided in the admission procedure section.
