Teaching Interests
I teach the following topics in the Graduate Studies in Public Health programme:
- Qualitative research methods (including short course)
- Food policy for public health practice (including short course)
- Public Health: Frameworks for change
I also teach in the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) where I co-coordinate the topic Public Health Studies.
Research Interests
My research interests concern the politics of food, food security and health promotion. This involves an examination of the social and cultural determinants of food choice and distribution at the level of the family and the community, including efforts to change eating habits. My research interest also concern food regulation and legislation, new food technologies, and national and international food policy. Methodologically, research combining quantitative and qualitative forms of inquiry is of interest. I am also interested in research on interventions to influence social and economic determinants of food choice and ways to increase food security. Recent and ongoing research projects include an analysis of the moral history of public health nutrition; an ethnography of family food habits; an investigation of the inclusion of environmental and social factors in nutrition promotion; the use of action research in professional development; public perceptions of trust in the food supply; and, mapping food access in metro and rural South Adelaide.
I have supervised to completion PhD theses in health promotion partnerships; the social construction of 'ethnic cuisines'; and food security and nutrition in homeless youth.
I welcome the opportunity to share my research interests with others, and am always interested in discussing research ideas with postgraduate students.
