Our research purpose in summary is:
We aim to make a significant contribution to socially just public health policy and practice.
In order to achieve this, we will conduct quality research, disseminate the findings actively and advocate for improved policies and practices.
To achieve our purpose, we have a three year Strategic Plan and research planning and capacity structures built around Three Key Research Areas asking what are the major health problems, what we can do about them, and how we can use critical perspectives to develop effective solutions:
- Health Promotion development, evaluation and strategies to reduce health inequities including Healthy Cities and Healthy Settings, community health services, services for Aboriginal people, food and health, community participation, physical activity and sport, children's settings and environments, partnerships and governance
- Research into the causes of health inequities including location and health, work, labour market and health, housing and health, low income and health, Aboriginal people and health, inequities and the health system
- Critical perspectives on the political economy of health and public health policies and research practices including analysis of global health policies,
We are working on multi-disciplinary, collaborative grants from NHMRC and ARC, including an NHMRC Capacity Building Grant that established the Australian Health Inequities Program ($2.5m) and a Strategic award from the NH&MRC on employment and Health ($1m). In 2007 we will launch the Australian Institute for Equity and Health which will be one of the university's flagship research programs.
Within South Australia our collaborations are strong and enduring: with the community health sector through South Australian Community Health Research Unit, with Aboriginal health through SACHRU and the CRC for Aboriginal Health, and with UniSA through an ARC Linkage Grant. Our long standing research collaboration with the University of Adelaide is evident in joint and reciprocal PhD supervision and in the DrPH. We have numerous national and international collaborations.
