Projects & People / PhD students

Over the last year AHIP has taken on 4 new PhD scholars at Flinders University to research in the areas of Work & Health, Social Location & Health, and Housing & Health:

Kathryn Browne-Yung is based in the Southgate Institute for Health Society & Equity and is exploring the comparative experience of low income individuals living in advantaged and disadvantaged areas.

Janet Adkins is based in the school of Geography, Population and Environmental Management and is researching whether precarious housing affects health through psychological stress due to the absence of control.

Jo Flavel is based in the National Institute of Labour Studies and is researching the impact of health on lifetime earnings, labour force experience and retirement. By examining the relationship between poor health and labour market outcomes over the life course, her project aims to determine the extent to which accumulating disadvantage associated with poor health influences the degree of income and health inequities post retirement.

Julia Anaf is based in the Southgate Institute for Health Society & Equity and is exploring implications for workers and broader policy issues following retrenchment and plant closure at Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd.

Louise Townend is a PhD student exploring the ideologies, discourses and evidence which inform, or are excluded from informing, obesity policy in Australia ; the differential impact on obesity policy on the various ideologies; and the impact which different ideologies might have on health equity. She is in the very early stages of her PhD research, but this builds on previous work done as part of her MA. Her earlier work focused on the moralization of obesity and the convergence of individualized discourses of blame around ill health and poverty, and the implications of this for policy.
