Biography

Professor Lynne Cobiac commenced her Chair appointment and Head, Dept of Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Medicine in January 2007. After completing her BSc at the University of Adelaide , Lynne completed both her Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics as well as her PhD into the role of eating fish and taking fish oil on cardiovascular risk factors in humans through the School of Medicine , Flinders University . Since then Lynne has also completed an Advanced MBA at Adelaide University and was awarded a prize in marketing.

Prior to taking up the current position at Flinders Lynne spent 20 years at CSIRO in a variety of roles ranging from research dietitian, research scientist, project leader, business manager as well as business development manager and research leader for a range of food, nutrition and diagnostic-related projects focusing on the prevention of the key chronic diseases of Australia namely colorectal cancer (and conversely the promotion of gut health), Alzheimer's disease, and cardiovascular disease as part of CSIRO's Preventative Health National Research Flagship. Lynne played a key role in the establishment of the Preventative Health Flagship. Her previous research interests took her into a wide variety of research areas including consumer science, iron deficiency, cross-cultural differences in nutritional intakes, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, as well as research in ageing, and gastrointestinal health. Lynne has also worked in a variety of clinical dietetic positions in both Adelaide and Sydney .

Research interests

Lynne is currently a member of the Executive for the Cancer Control Alliance, a Flinders University Area of Research Focus (ARF), a member of the Aboriginal Health and the Clinical Change to Health Care ARFs.

Current research projects

With the increase in overweight and obesity, it is important to determine the current nutritional intakes and physical activity patterns of Australia 's children. Lynne is a co-investigator on a $3m project collaborative project with CSIRO and the University of South Australia conducting a national survey of 4000 children's nutrition and physical activity patterns funded by the Department of Health and Ageing, Australian Food and Grocery Council, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (see http://www.kidseatkidsplay.com.au/).

Lynne has an ongoing collaboration with CSIRO's Preventative Health National Research Flagship (see www.csiro.au) and with Graeme Young, Professor of Gastroenterology, Flinders University , focusing on the delivery of short chain fatty acids to the colon to determine the effects on colorectal cancer risk and on gut health.

The Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing is a unique cohort of elderly participants who have been followed since 1992. Nutritional intake as a potential determinant of healthy or successful ageing and quality of life is under investigation.

As a member of the Nutrition, Obesity, Lifestyle and Environment (NOBLE) collaboration, Lynne is involved in obesity-related research.
