March 2006The first annual CNS Invitation BBQ was held (Wed 29th) outside the lecture theatres on level 5 of the Flinders Medical Centre. The BBQ aimed to provide an opportunity for members of the CNS to meet informally with each other and with invited undergraduate students with an interest in neuroscience. The BBQ was deemed both a culinary success (thank you to Patrick, Charles and Karen) and an objective success with 20 new student members being added. Full Member Prof Leon Lack gave a colloquium talk to the School of Psychology on the project to help the Socceroos Australian Soccer team overcome jet-lag quickly in order to compete effectively for the playoff game with Uruguay in order to gain entry to the 2006 World Cup Championships (Fri 17th). Full Members Prof Ian Gibbins and Jennifer Clarke feature in the March 06 edition of Research Pulse, in an article (page 5) on the "New Confocal Microscope". Student Member and Representative Dylan Smith features in the March 06 edition of Research Pulse, in an article (page 5) congratulating him on his award of a PhD scholarship from the Faculty of Health Sciences. Another Student Member Jan Baker, also featured in this edition of Research Pulse, in an article (page 8) congratulating her on receiving an 'American Psychosomatic Society (APS) Scholar’s Award to attend the 2006 annual meeting by the APS and National Institutes of Health in the US'! February 2006Life Members Prof Marcello Costa, Assoc Prof Judy Morris and Full Member Prof Greg Barritt were all honoured with Staff Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Flinders University! The awards were presented by Vice-Chancellor Anne Edwards during the 40th Anniversary Staff Party (Thurs 23rd). Full Members Prof Ian Gibbins and Jennifer Clarke were both speakers at the introduction of the "New Leica SP5 Spectral Confocal Microscopes" at the University of Adelaide Basement (Medical School North, Frome Road) on the 21st. The introductory session included a presentation and demonstration of the new FCS and FLIM techniques available. Full Member Prof Leon Lack gave a Talk and Q&A on Sleep, aging, and prevention of insomnia to the Flinders branch of the University of the Third Age (Thurs 16th). January 2006The Australian Neuroscience Society's 26th Annual General Meeting was held at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre (31st Jan - 3rd Feb), and Full Members Prof Ian Gibbins and Dr Eugene Nalivaiko were both invited to speak. Prof Gibbins gave the Laurie Austin Lecture, while Dr Nalivaiko gave a presentation entitled "Central serotonin receptors in cardiac control during stress" as part of the Central Control of the Heart Symposia. Life Member Prof John Willoughby is awarded the title of Emeritus Professor by the Flinders University (after his retirement in December 2005), in recognition of his service and contribution to the University and the School of Medicine. December 2005The CNS Annual General Meeting is held (13th) in the Horseshoe Seminar Room of the Flinders Medical Centre (minutes available as .pdf), followed by the 2005 Neuropursuit Championship. The AGM was particularly eventful, with Full Members Prof John Willoughby, Prof Marcello Costa and Assoc Prof Judy Morris all being awarded Life Membership of the CNS for their outstanding contributions to neuroscience research at Flinders University. Associate Member Dr Anne Hamilton-Bruce is acknowledged with a Team Award: Best Financial Plan 2005 from the South Australian Enterprise Workshop (SAEW), Principal Financial Pty Ltd. Student Member Dr Dayan de Fontgalland is awarded a Roy and Marjory Edwards Scholarship. Full Member Prof Tom Gordon features in the December 05 edition of Research Pulse. Full Member Assoc Prof Richard Clark gave the opening address at the launch of Brain Injury Awareness Week, at the Adelaide Town Hall (Mon 19th). Full Member Prof Marcello Costa was an invited speaker at the launch of the web based educational project for “Physiopathology of Gastrointestinal Motility” at the WCG in Montreal. The CNS congratulates Student Member Linda Wu on being awarded the Laurie Geffen Travel Prize in 2005! Linda will be attending the Society for Neuroscience Conference in Washington DC in November this year, and was presented (Tues 6th) with the award and her cheque for $1000 by Acting Convenor Prof Simon Brookes (below). August 2005Full Member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited to talk (Wed 31st) on Sleep, Prevention and Treatment of Insomnia to a community group (N=50) organized by the Adelaide Hills Division of General Practice, Mt Barker. Full Members Prof Marcello Costa and Prof Ian Gibbins spoke at "The Science of Art" (Tues 16th) at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel (‘The Gov’) in Hindmarsh. Full Member Xin-Fu Zhou is promoted from University Level C (Senior Lecturer) to Level D (Associate Professor)! July 2005Full Member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited to give a talk (Tues 26th) to the SA Gerontology Conference (120 health care professionals) on “The reduction and prevention of insomnia in the elderly” at Hindmarsh. Full Member Prof Marcello Costa was an invited speaker - "Advances in sensors; the lessons from Neurosciences” - at the Advances in Sensing with Security Applications (17-30th July) in il Ciocco, Italy. Full Member Dr Yoichiro Otsuka is awarded the 2005 Elizabeth Penfold Simpson Prize of $15,000! The prize is awarded annually by the Brain Foundation of SA for "best original research work in basic or clinical neuroscience". Full Member Dr Ida Llewellyn-Smith was a Symposium Speaker - “Autonomic Control of the Urogenital System” - at the 4th Congress of the International Society for Autonomic Neuroscience held in Marseilles, France. June 2005Associate Member Dr Anne Hamilton-Bruce is awarded a BioInnovation SA Travel Scholarship, to attend and present at the BIO 2005 International Convention in Philadelphia during the 19-22 June. Full Member Dr Ida Llewellyn-Smith gave an invited seminar entitled "Unravelling Spinal Autonomic Nerve Pathways that Regulate the Pelvic Viscera ” to the Department of Pharmacology at the Merck Research Laboratories in Rahway, New Jersey, USA. Full Member Prof Simon Brookes features in the June 05 edition of Research Pulse. The article (page 6) announces Simon's recent promotion to Head of Human Physiology! May 2005Full Member Assoc Prof Simon Brookes was invited by the American Gastroenterological Association to give a symposium (Wed 18th) on Gastrointestinal Sensation as part of Digestive Disease Week in Chicago, USA. Full Member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited to give a public lecture to 100 individuals about Sleep and the avoidance of insomnia (Thurs 5th). The lecture was organized by the Murray Mallee Division of General Practice, Murray Bridge. The CNS congratulates Dr Rainer Haberberger from the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, and Dr Hakan Muyderman from the Flinders University Department of Medical Biochemistry, on award of the Mary Overton Neuroscience Research Fellowships, and Full Member Dr Tim Chataway, on being awarded the Sir Mark Oliphant Research Fellowship. Associate Member Dr Anne Hamilton-Bruce is awarded the Vocational Excellence Award from the Rotary Club of Woodville! April 2005The CNS farewelled long time Full Member Dr Jenny Hiscock. Jenny (pictured below with CNS Convenor Judy Morris) was presented with a Certificate (Tues 19th) in appreciation for all her contributions to the CNS during her membership. Jenny will be taking up a full time position with the University of South Australia and is wished all the best by CNS members.

Student Member Baishi (Shannon) Wang was awarded a Human Physiology Honours Scholarship for 2005! Full Member Prof Ian Gibbins' article "Chillies on the Brain" was published in the 1st of April 2005 edition of The Adelaide Review. The invitation to write the article came as a result of the visit by Baroness Prof Susan Greenfield as part of the Adelaide Thinkers in Residence scheme. The article was one of a series promoted by the South Australian Neuroscience Institute (SANI). Full member Prof Greg Barritt (along with other staff associated with the Calcium Signalling Laboratory) was invited to give a seminar, entitled "Challenges in understanding calcium signalling in the polarised liver cell" at the Calcium Function in Development, Health and Disease: Applications in Biotechnology Conference, in Hong Kong (29 Nov - 2 Dec). October 2004Full Members Prof Marcello Costa and Prof Ian Gibbins were invited to speak at the 4th Annual HGSA Symposium 'Genes in Mind', held at Urrbrae House (Fri 15th). Prof Costa spoke on "The future of Neuroscience - an SA Perspective" and Prof Gibbins spoke on the "Neurobiology of Music". Full member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited to organise and teach in the Advanced Course on Circadian Rhythm Disorders and Treatments prior to the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian Sleep Association in Sydney (Thurs 14th). Full member Assoc Prof Neil Sims and staff from the Stroke Laboratory were invited to give a seminar, entitled "Mitochondria, oxidative stress and tissue damage in stroke" at the Issues for Neuroprotection Symposium at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Stroke Society of Australasia in Hobart, Tasmania. September 2004Full member Assoc Prof Richard Clark was invited to give to give his seminar “Integrative neuroscience in the assessment of functional brain disorders” at the Eli Lilly Symposium, at Mount Lofty House in Adelaide (Fri 17th). The Mary Overton Neuroscience Research Fellowships open for applications. Two Fellowships have been created with a bequest from the late Mary Overton, AM, to the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, to attract or retain outstanding neuroscientists with five to ten years postdoctoral experience to the Centre for Neuroscience. The Fellowships provide salary and $50,000 per annum laboratory maintenance funding... Full member Assoc Prof Richard Clark was invited to speak at the Conference of the International Society for Neuronal Regulation, in Sydney, Australia (Sun 12th). His talk was entitled “Update on the application of the Brain Resource International Database to neurofeedback”. The Centre farewelled long-time Full Member Prof Ann Crocker. Prof Crocker has resigned from the Flinders University's Department of Psychiatry and her career was celebrated by CNS members and University staff at a special farewell function (Fri 10th) inside the Flinders Medical Centre. August 2004The Flinders University announced it's first five Areas of Strategic Research Investment (ASRIs). Among the winning submissions was the Centre's "Neuroscience: Researching the nervous system in health and disease". The ASRI will mean $234,000 in funding over 3 years.
Full Member Assoc Prof Neil Sims is promoted to Level D Plus (Professor). Full Members Prof Ian Gibbins and Dr Jenny Hiscock were invited to speak by Fluorescence Imagers SA (FISA) at the University of Adelaide (Fri 27th). Prof Gibbins spoke on "3D Reconstruction and Deconvolution" while Dr Hiscock spoke on "Measuring Fluorescent Intensities". July 2004Full member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited by Flinders Technologies to give a presentation on "Treatment of Jet Lag with bright light", to the Executives of Essilor Inc. in Sydney (Thurs 29th). The aim was to further the commercialization of the LED light glasses. Full member Assoc Prof Richard Clark was invited by Noarlunga Health Services to give his seminar entitled “Integrative neuroscience in the assessment of functional brain disorders” (Mon 12th). The Baroness Professor Susan Greenfield arrived in Adelaide as the Adelaide Thinker in Residence (ATIR) and CNS Student Members had a privileged opportunity to spend time with her to chat informally about life, the universe and neuroscience over lunch (Fri 9th). Full Member Assoc Prof Tim Neild, was judged (by blind peer review) as having the best paper at the Australian University Quality Forum. The Forum was held in Adelaide on the 8-9th July. Glenside Hospital invited Full member Assoc Prof Richard Clark to give his seminar on “Computerised cognitive assessment using the Brain Resource International Database”. June 2004Dr Pascal Carrive from the Department of Anatomy at the University of New South Wales visited the CNS (Tues 15 & Wed 16th). An expert in the area of central cardiovascular control, his special interest is in brain mechanisms of the fear-induced autonomic changes. During his time with us he presented a seminar entitled "Neural substrate of the cardiovascular response to psychological stress and the role of hypothalamic orexin/hypocretin neurons" (Tues 15th). May 2004Full member Assoc Prof Richard Clark was invited to give a seminar entitled “Evidence based evaluation of ADHD” at the Flinders Medical Centre's Pediatrics Grand Round (Thurs 20th). Full member Dr Anne Hamilton-Bruce, was invited (along with staff associated with the NeuroPhysiology Laboratory) to give a presentation entitled "Polygenic Disease: A Study of Genetic Risk in an Australian Stroke Population" to the Australian Association of Neurologists’ Annual Scientific Meeting in Perth. April 2004Full member Assoc Prof Richard Clark was invited to give a seminar at the Conference of the Association of Neurophysiological Technicians of Australia (ANTA) (Thurs 29th). The seminar was entitled "Assessing cognitive and brain function using the Brain Resource International Database". The CNS Executive was pleased to announce during the last NeuroSeminar (Tues 20th) that Alison Wadey (Dept of Medical Biochemistry) and James London (Dept of General & Digestive Surgery) were awarded CNS Honours Scholarships for 2004. The Scholarships are proudly funded by the FMC Foundation, and Assoc Prof John Oliver was on hand to present Alison and James with their certificates and cheques.

February 2004Full member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited to give a presentation about "insomnia education and treatment", to the Mental Health Network of the Divisions of General Practice Medicine, South Australia (Wed 18th). Full member Assoc Prof Leon Lack was invited to give a Professional Development Seminar to the College of Clinical Psychologists SA (Fri 13th). The feedback evaluation from the 21 participants of the 3 hour session showed modal rating on the highest rating of the five point scale. Student Member Kristy Weir wins the Syd Wilkins Memorial Prize! This prize is awarded annually by the Australian Branch of the World's Poultry Science Association, to a single poultry scientist under the age of 35, in recognition of Outstanding Research in Australia. Kristy was presented with the award at the Australian Poultry Science Symposium in Sydney (9th-11th) where she presented a paper entitled "Neural control of ratite skin" (Kristy Weir & Chris Lunam). January 2004CNS Members travelled to Melbourne for the Annual Meeting of the Australian Neuroscience Society (27th-30th). Full member Dr Xin-Fu Zhou was invited to give his seminar, entitled "Role of neurotrophins in neuropathic pain" at the ANS Satellite Meeting: Neuropathic pain, at the Melbourne University. Student Members Amelia Eyre and Steve Grillett both successfully completed their Honours year. Amelia and Steve were the CNS Honours Scholarship winners for 2003, and are wished every success by members, in their future endeavours. November 2003Associate Member Dr Zbigniew Gieroba, is promoted to Level B Academic, Flinders University. October 2003CNS Student Representative Dr Mark Brooke-Smith is awarded the Best Poster Presentation (experimental pancreatitis) at the UK meeting of the European Pancreatic Club. Student Member Lorraine Mackenzie is awarded her PhD. The 25th Anniversary Visiting Fellowship of Patrice Guyenet from the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville VA, USA, concluded this month (Fri 3rd). During his time with us, Prof Guyenet was hosted by the Cardiovascular Neuroscience Laboratory, and took part in a workshop entitled "The ventral surface of the medulla and central chemosensitivity", presented a seminar entitled "The role of glutamate in cardiorespiratory networks: insights from the expression pattern of the three glutamate vesicular transporters", and was the Special Guest at a dinner held in his honour at Café Mediterranean. September 2003The ceremony to acknowledge the generous $2.3million bequest of Mary Overton to support neuroscience research at Flinders was held in Lecture Theatre 4 of the Flinders Medical Centre (Fri 26th). The ceremony was attended by members of Mary Overton's family, members of the FMC Foundation board, senior representatives of the hospital and university, as well as by neuroscience researchers. There was an introduction by CNS Member Prof John Willoughby, and short research presentations demonstrating the range and quality of neuroscience research here by CNS members. Members also presented a short overview of the CNS - past, present and future. This was followed by the unveiling of a plaque dedicated to Mary Overton (Level 2 Gallery Walkway) by the FMC Foundation and lunch in the outside courtyard. Full Member Assoc Prof Dominic Thyagarajan is interviewed by Channel 7 about Parkinson's Disease. August 2003Neuroimaging Laboratory Investigator Prof Michael Sage became the first Australian to be awarded an Honorary Membership of the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology. Full Member Dr Ian Ferguson, is awarded a Churchill Fellowship. The fellowship will allow him to travel to China and the United Stated to test new spinal cord injury treatments. Student Member Lorraine Mackenzie is awarded a Peter Doherty Fellowship to investigate the electrical disturbances responsible for abnormal heart rhythms associated with common life-threatening heart diseases. July 2003The Bio Innovation SA Networking Forum "Mind Fields" is held in Lecture Theatre 3 of the Flinders Medical Centre. The forum was well attended by CNS members, and Full Member Prof Bill Blessing was asked to speak on the"Effects of drugs on the brain". Full Member Dr Dean Pountney was promoted to Level B (Lecturer), Flinders University. June 2003Full Member Assoc Prof Richard Clarke and his team successfully vied for funding under the Australian Research Council's Linkage Scheme for research that will use an evidence-based approach to evaluate treatment Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). May 2003Full Member Prof Marcello Costa was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Federal Government for 'service to Australian Society in neurophysiology'. Full Member Prof Ian Gibbins joined the team of speakers for the Flinders Medical Centre 2003 Community Lecture entitled "Stem Cell Therapy - Fact, Fiction and the Future". The Lecture was followed up with a Live Radio Interview with Carole Whitelock on ABC Radio 89 the following week. April 2003The CNS Executive were pleased to announce that Amelia Eyre (Dept Human Physiology) and Steve Grillet (Dept Anatomy & Histology) were awarded CNS Honours Scholarships for 2003.
