Current Position:
Associate Professor of Behavioural Science and Medicine
Research Interests:
• Health Psychology
The unifying theme of my health psychology research is "the psychosocial evaluation of the reaction and adaptation to disease". For example, a recent study has examined participation rates in cardiac rehabilitation programs. Other themes include: (1) the analysis of neuroticism, abnormal illness behaviour, and their interaction, (2) the social-cognitive analysis of adolescent body image; and (3) the psychometric properties of self-rating instruments for the detection of sub-clinical depression among community-dwelling elderly.
• Lifestyle Activities of Elderly People
This program had its origins in the identified limitations of existing measures of lifestyle activities. Research has focused on the development of the Adelaide Activities Profile (AAP), including the derivation of subscales, and age and sex norms. The validity of AAP data obtained from proxy informants has also been examined.
• The Relationship between Stress and Disease
Using caregivers of spouses with dementia as the experimental model this program seeks to explore the utility of the concept of "allostatic load" as the causal link between stress and the manifestation of physical disease. This research has received international funding through the Alzheimer's Association (USA).
