Scholarships

JOHN FLYNN SCHOLARSHIPS (Medical Students)

Established in 1997, these medical student scholarships are an integral part of the Federal Government's long-term strategy to attract more GPs and improve the quality of health care in rural areas. Working closely with a GP mentor and the host community, medical students develop a better understanding of the challenges and rewards associated with rural medical practice and non-metropolitan health care services.

These scholarships are funded by the Commonwealth Government and have been administered by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine from 2002 (ACRRM). There are up to 150 new scholarships offered annually. These scholarships are worth an average of $3150 and cover costs such as travel, accommodation and living expenses. RAMUS (Medical Students)

Rural and Medical Undergraduate Scholarships (RAMUS) are a Federal Government initiative, managed by the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA) on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

The aim of the RAMUS is to increase the number of students with a rural background who enter and complete their study of medicine at a tertiary level. The RAMUS provides financial assistance and scholarship holders receive $10,000 each year during their medical studies. MEDICAL RURAL BONDED SCHOLARSHIPS (Medical Students)

As part of the 2000/01 Budget, the Federal Government announced details of a new Regional Health Strategy, which includes an integrated range of initiatives to deliver more doctors and better services to rural and regional communities. The Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme is one of those initiatives and is offered to a selection of students commencing medicine.
