The Person's Experience of Chronic Condition Self-Management
A collection of person’s experience of Chronic Condition Self-Management has just been released entitled The Person’s Experience of Chronic Condition Self-Management: A Collection of Case Studies. This collection of case studies was prepared by Dr Sharon Lawn from the Flinders Human Behaviour and Health Research Unit (FHBHRU) in collaboration with students undertaking the postgraduate program in Chronic Condition Management.

Peer support: Improving depression management in a global world
Malcolm Battersby and Sharon Lawn of FHBHRU with their international partners Dr David Richards of the University of York in the United Kingdom and Dr Marcia Valenstien of the University of Michigan (USA) will pilot an international peer-partner support program linking people in treatment with depression across national boundaries via telephone voice-over internet protocol (VOIP) and a study website.
Flinders Model training in the United States & Canada
In October of this year, Dr Malcolm Battersby of FHBHRU will be travelling to the USA and Canada. While there he will be conducting a Flinders Model workshop in a series of annual workshops at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) and medical school (in Eastern Pennsylvania, USA). The Flinders Program will become part of a major research initiative in chronic disease management at the hospital and throughout its primary care network. Dr Mark Kender from LVH will explore the outcomes of using the Flinders Model in private practice settings as part of the training of residents in family practice.
Further training will also be provided in Alberta Canada where medical authorities are exploring the use of the Flinders Model in primary care throughout the province by establishing a network of Flinders trainers. Training for these health professionals will occur in October 2008.
Presentation at the DVA Seminar Series
Dr Jill Beattie recently represented FHBHRU, at The Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) series of Applied Research Seminars. Jill reported on the progress of the Vietnam veteran’s: Real partners in health – A trial of implementing evidence based care and self management for veterans with alcohol-related disorders. The Seminars were held at the DVA’s Canberra office in February 2008.
Trainers of Excellence - Advancing the Way Forward
The inaugural Flinders Model Accredited Trainers Conference was held at Flinders University on Monday August 27 and Tuesday August 28. An exciting two day program was enjoyed by 24 Accredited Trainers from around Australia and New Zealand, and it was a great opportunity for people to share stories and learn from each others experiences
The development of a prevention and self-management training program for lifestyle advisors
In a six month project, Flinders Human Behaviour & Health Research Unit and the South Australian Department of Health, aim to adapt the Flinders Model of self-management assisted care planning to include risk factor assessment as part of a self-management approach. A risk factor tool will be developed which is web-based. The training program is aimed at lifestyle advisors who will be providing assessments and goal setting for risk factor reduction in people at highest risk of chronic disease, with diabetes a principle focus of the program.
Chronic Condition Self-Management Forum 28 August 2007
There was a huge response to our announcement that we were opening up the presentations from the final afternoon of the Accredited Trainers Conference as a free forum - we had all 65 places filled within 2 days. There were concurrent workshops on Self-Management Support in the three areas of Mental Health, Aboriginal Health and Child / Youth Health. This was followed by presentations on the Flinders Model in Research and Evaluation, presented by Malcolm Battersby, Sharon Lawn, Peter Harvey and Jill Beattie.
Exceptional contribution by an individual
Congratulations to Dr Sharon Lawn of FHBHRU (Course Coordinator Graduate Program in Chronic Condition Management & Self-Management) who was awarded the ‘Exceptional Contribution by an Individual’ Award at the MHS Conference (TheMHS) held in Melbourne recently.
New Statewide Gambling Therapy Service launch
The expanded State-wide intervention program targeting problem gamblers was launched on Friday October 19th by Families and Communities Minister Jay Weatherill, with a new service opening in Salisbury.
